Nose Surgery

RHINOPLASTY

Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the aesthetic appearance and proportion of the nose. Nose surgery may also be elected to correct trauma, birth defects and structural abnormalities that often result in impaired breathing.

Dr. Dan Shell is a board-certified plastic surgeon who performs nose surgery in Northern Mississippi. Through nose surgery, Dr. Shell can meet your aesthetic goals by effectively creating a more harmonious balance of your facial features.

WHO IS THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR NOSE SURGERY?

Nose surgery is a very personalized procedure. You may be a potential candidate for nose surgery if:

  • You are 13 years of age or older with complete facial growth
  • You are dissatisfied with the size or shape of your nose
  • You are having sinus or breathing problems due to structural abnormalities in your nose
  • You possess realistic expectations of nose surgery

Additionally, ideal candidates will be in good overall physical and psychological health prior to nose surgery. During your consultation with Dr. Shell, he will be able to determine if nose surgery is right for you based on your medical history, a nose examination, and a discussion of your cosmetic goals.

PLANNING YOUR RESULTS WITH VECTRA 3D® IMAGING

At Shell Plastic Surgery, we help patients feel more comfortable heading into surgery with Vectra 3D imaging. We use Vectra to help plan each patient’s unique procedure and work together with them to plan their results. With a quick scan of the face, we are able to alter the shape of your nose using Vectra’s realistic 3D imaging system so you can see how your new nose will look before a single incision is made.

In many cases, it is difficult for patients considering rhinoplasty to understand the expected outcome. Fortunately, planning and approximating the results with the Vectra system has made this much easier.

A nose that is humped, wide, or crooked should be seen from several angles to understand what needs to be reshaped. With the 6-camera Vectra imaging system, we can capture images of your face and then analyze the angles of your nose from different viewpoints as the image rotates.

FAQ

There are numerous factors to consider before committing to any cosmetic surgery. Below is a list of frequently asked questions associated with nose surgery in our Northern Mississippi plastic surgery office.

  • How does nose surgery work?

Nose surgery is typically performed in two to four hours under general anesthesia. In most cases, an incision will be made inside the nostrils so that Dr. Shell can gain access to the underlying tissue. The skin will then be separated from the cartilage, and Dr. Shell will reshape or augment the cartilage using specialized tools to meet your cosmetic goals.

  • What happens after nose surgery?

Following surgery, you may be required to wear a nasal splint and internal packing for several days. It is common for patients to experience nasal discomfort or a dull headache, which may be controlled with pain medication. In most cases, you should be able to return to work and resume normal activities within ten days. The final results of your nose surgery may not be apparent for several months due to prolonged swelling.

  • Are the results permanent?

Nose surgery will provide a permanent improvement to the appearance of your nose and should only be considered if you wish to permanently alter the shape, size or proportion of your nose. Though the results of nose surgery will be permanent, there is the chance that cartilage will continue to reshape and move tissue, which may alter results over time.

  • Are there any risks associated with nose surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, nose surgery involves a certain degree of risk. The chance of experiencing complications during nose surgery, or as a result of it, are infrequent. Some potential risks may include scarring, reactions to anesthesia, nerve damage or infection. During the consultation process, Dr. Shell will discuss all potential risks in depth.

  • Why should I choose Dr. Shell for nose surgery?

During your consultation, Dr. Shell will listen carefully to your concerns, ensuring that all treatments are customized to meet your goals. His practice uses the latest technology in a comfortable and confidential setting. Dr. Shell is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and The American Board of Surgery.
