MALE BREAST REDUCTION
GYNECOMASTIA CORRECTION SURGERY
Male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia correction, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of over-developed or enlarged male breasts. More than one technique may be utilized to effectively remove excess fat and tissue from the breast area.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Dan Shell is proud to offer male breast reduction in Northern Mississippi. Using techniques such as liposuction and excision (surgical tissue removal), Dr. Shell can significantly reduce the appearance of overly-large male breasts.
WHO IS THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
Male breast reduction can be performed on men of all ages. You may be an appropriate candidate for male breast reduction if:
- You are near your ideal body weight
- Your breast development has stabilized
- You are bothered by the size of your breasts
Adolescents may be potential candidates for male breast reduction, although secondary procedures may be needed if breast development has not stabilized. During your consultation with Dr. Shell, he will be able to determine if male breast reduction is right for you.
Before & After
FAQ
There are numerous factors to consider before committing to any cosmetic surgery. Below is a list of frequently asked questions associated with male breast reduction:
-
How does male breast reduction work?
Male breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis and will require general or local anesthesia. Liposuction, excision or a combination of both may be used, depending on your cosmetic needs. Liposuction-only male breast reduction is employed when excess fatty tissue is the primary cause of overly large breasts, while excision-only male breast reduction is used when excess skin or glandular breast tissue is the primary cause of overly-large breasts.
-
What can I expect during recovery?
Most patients experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for several days following surgery. Dr. Shell will provide you with compression garments to minimize swelling and medication to manage your pain. If you undergo liposuction, a small tube may be placed temporarily underneath your skin to drain excess fluid. Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities within three weeks of surgery.
-
Are the results permanent?
In most cases, the results of your surgery will be permanent. Significant weight gain as well as certain medications, such as steroids, may impact the long-term results of male breast reduction. Initiating a healthy diet and exercise routine and avoiding certain medications will increase the likelihood of long-lasting results.
-
Are there any risks associated with male breast reduction?
All surgeries carry some degree of risk and uncertainty. Dr. Shell will discuss all of the potential risks associated with male breast reduction with you prior to your surgery. Some risks may include adverse reaction to anesthesia, infection, loss of nipple sensation, excessive scarring or asymmetry.
