For some individuals, an ideal body shape cannot be achieved through diet and exercise alone. Liposuction is a surgical solution for men and women struggling with the appearance of persistent pockets of excess fat.

Dr. Dan Shell is a board certified plastic surgeon in North Mississippi with training and experience performing liposuction.

Who is the Right Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction may not be the right choice for everyone; however, you may be an ideal candidate if you are healthy and meet some of the following criteria:

  • You wish to target specific areas of fat
  • You desire a more slender silhouette
  • You are at or near an ideal body weight for your height

Additionally, it is important for liposuction candidates to possess realistic expectations and goals. Liposuction is not a weight loss method. During your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Shell, he will be able to determine if liposuction is the best available procedure for your cosmetic goals.

There are numerous factors to consider before committing to any cosmetic surgery. Below is a list of frequently asked questions associated with liposuction:

How does liposuction work?

Liposuction is performed using tiny, inconspicuous incisions for fat removal. Dr. Shell will begin by administering a sterile liquid solution to reduce trauma and bleeding in the treated area. He will then insert a small tube, or cannula, into these incisions using back and forth motions to dislodge and suction out excess fat through a vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.

What can I expect during recovery?

Following surgery, you will be required to wear compression garments for several days to minimize swelling. Most patients experience some numbness, discomfort, swelling and bruising for several days. Dr. Shell may prescribe medication to help you manage your pain.

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

The results of liposuction are more or less permanent; however, if you gain a significant amount of weight following treatment, this may impact the long-term results of your liposuction procedure. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can extend the results of liposuction for many years.

Are there any risks associated with liposuction?

All surgeries carry some degree of risk and uncertainty. Possible complications vary depending on the extent of your procedure, but may include infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, poor cosmetic result, blood clots or friction burns. Dr. Shell and his staff will discuss these risks with you in detail during your consultation.
