FAT GRAFTING
FACIAL FAT TRANSFER
As we age, underlying collagen and elastin begin to break down, creating the appearance of fine lines and deep facial wrinkles. Facial fat grafting, also referred to as autologous fat transplantation or fat injections, is a minimally invasive procedure that can restore youthful contours to the face without surgery.
Double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Dan Shell performs facial fat grafting in Northern Mississippi. Through this technique, he is able to use fat extracted from a donor site on your body to fill in sunken cheeks or lines, correct skin depressions, minimize forehead wrinkles, and enhance the lips.
WHO IS THE RIGHT CANDIDATE FOR FACIAL FAT GRAFTING?
Facial fat grafting is a very individualized procedure. The best candidates will be men and women who wish to treat one or more of the following conditions:
- Facial creases and folds
- Thin lips
- Sunken cheeks
- Laugh lines
- Recessed scars
To be a good candidate for facial fat grafting, it is important that you possess good overall health and realistic expectations of the outcome of this procedure. During your consultation with Dr. Shell, he will be able to determine if facial fat grafting is capable of meeting your cosmetic goals.
FAQ
There are numerous factors to consider before committing to any cosmetic procedure. Below is a list of frequently asked questions associated with facial fat grafting:
-
How does facial fat grafting work?
Facial fat grafting is an outpatient procedure that involves both a donor site (e.g., the buttocks or the abdomen) and a treatment site. Once both areas are thoroughly cleansed and numbed, Dr. Shell will withdraw fat from the donor site using a syringe or liposuction cannula. The fat will then be cleansed and processed prior to being injected into the treatment site.
-
What happens after facial fat grafting?
In most cases, you should be able to resume normal activity immediately following facial fat grafting. It is likely that you will experience some swelling and redness in both the donor and treatment sites. The severity of these symptoms will depend on the size and location of the treated areas. All swelling should fully subside within six weeks.
-
Are the results permanent?
If your facial fat grafting is successful, results can last for one year or more. The majority of patients find that at least half of the injected fullness disappears within 3-6 weeks. Therefore, additional treatment sessions may be necessary to prolong optimal results. You will need to wait at least three months before initiating additional treatments.
-
What are some of the risks associated with facial fat grafting?
The most common risks associated with facial fat grafting are cosmetic ones. There is the chance that you will be dissatisfied with the amount of fat tissue implanted or with the fat absorption rate. Other risks may include an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, infection or bad bruising. Prior to your procedure, Dr. Shell will be able to discuss all potential risks with you in detail.
